The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of energy consumption and
economic growth on environmental pollution of the ten countries with the highest carbon
dioxide emissions per capita according to the Global Carbon Project, and whether the
Environmental Kuznets Curve (ÇKE) hypothesis is valid. In this study, in which the panel
cointegration test developed by Westerlund and Edgerton (2007) was used, findings
regarding the existence of a cointegration relationship in the fixed and trend model were
obtained. After determining the existence of a panel cointegration relationship in the ten
countries with the highest carbon dioxide emissions per capita, the long-term cointegration
coefficients were tested with the help of the Generalized Average Group (AMG) estimator
developed by Eberhard and Bond (2009), Eberhardt and Teal (2010). Although the results
differ from country to country, an upward U-shaped curve is observed in the long-term
cointegration parameter, in contrast to the inverted U curve that is valid in the EKC
hypothesis. Therefore, it was determined that the EKC hypothesis was not valid. When
viewed on a country basis; Contrary to the inverted U expectation that is valid in the EKC
hypothesis in Australia, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, and Saudi Arabia, it was determined that
there was an upward U-shaped curve and thus the EKC hypothesis was invalid. Qatar has
an inverted U-shaped curve. Therefore, it has been seen that the EKC hypothesis is valid in
Qatar. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), however, there is neither an inverted U nor a
U-shaped relationship.
