The concept of conservation corresponds a dynamic process that does not lose its
importance, both in past civilizations and in current life. The aim of this concept is to
understand and interpret the past and transfer the cultural heritage to the next generation for
maintaining cultural integrity. There has been an evolution from only the protection of the
historical building to the planning of the area management with a holistic conservation
approach with the environment of the building and even with the social and economic aspects
of its surroundings. Deviation from this area management, which requires a holistic protection
and collective participation, has become widespread especially since the second half of the
20th century. With the start of this process, the interventions to be made have started to cover
a wider area and concept.
It is one of the important ancient cities established on the southern slope of Samsun
(Mykele) Mountain, 15 km southwest of Aydın Söke district. While its establishment on a
steep rock at a height of 370 meters provides an important advantage throughout history
against possible attacks from the sea and the environment; it is also made visible from many
places. The "Grid System" developed by the architect Hippodamus of Miletus has caused
Priene to be recognized worldwide. This system, which is accepted as a grid-shaped city plan,
was also used in Priene. The city streets, which reach a width of 3.5 meters, were built with
stairs due to the sloping land.
In this thesis prepared, a holistic, sustainable and feasible management with the aim of
protecting the environment where Priene Ancient City is located, through the participation of
the relevant actors, based on the methods that can be implemented in the management plans
based on both international documents and nationally determined criteria. Plan work has been
tried to be created.
