The neglect of psychological factors in economics which is a human-oriented
science has led to criticism of mainstream economic theory. Developing as a sub-branch of
behavioral economics discipline that emerged as a result of increasing criticism, happiness
economy has become an increasingly important field in economic studies in recent years. It
has been observed in studies conducted in the field of happiness economy that several
variables have an effect on happiness and life satisfaction.
The aim of this study is to investigate the viewsof Turkish academicians, who go
abroad on their free will and wish, and return to Turkey to resume their studies at any
university, about brain drain from the perspective of life satisfaction. In this context, the
survey technique was appliedand the obtained data were tested with independent groups t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), factor and reliability analysis, regression
analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). According to the findings obtained from
research, there is a statistically significant effect of life satisfaction on factors that attract
them to abroad and repel them from Turkey. Although all academics generally state their
intention to return to Turkey when they first go abroad, then they waver about the intention
and would like to emigrate abroad. Those who want to emigrate abroad mostly prefer the
developed countries such as the United States of America (the USA), England and Germany
for postgraduate education and research and development.
