Due to their narrow emission bands, high color purity, broad emission range (from ultraviolet to infrared), decay times for fluorescence from nanoseconds to milliseconds and for phosphorescence from seconds to minutes, interesting optical and magnetic properties rare earth doped luminescent materials are often used in high technology applications. Among rare earth elements, cerium element has received much attention. Ce3+ ion with parity-allowed transitions shows a broad band emission with a typical fast decay time about few nanoseconds and stronger luminescence intensity in UV and visible ranges. Fast Ce3+ activated inorganic materials such as glasses and crystals are used as phosphors for displays and lightings, as well as scintillators in high energy and nuclear physics, medical imaging and security. The spectroscopic studies of the cerium ion are concerned in the silicate, borogermanate, borosilicate and phosphate-based glass systems. Cerium element has two stable valence states, Ce3+ and Ce4+, and the Ce4+ ions must be reduced to Ce3+ in order to improve the luminescencent properties. Aforementioned reduction can be carried out through the incorporation of reducing agents to be glass system or the reducing atmosphere used in the melting process. In the first part of this thesis, borogermanate (B2O3-GeO2-Gd2O3:CeO2) glasses doped with various CeO2 concentration were prepared and glass composition with optimum Ce3+ ion concentration has been determined. In the second step, different reducing agents (Si3N4, C, Sb2O3) with various concentrations were doped to the determined composition and the physical, structural and optical properties of the obtained glasses were investigated. The structural analysis of glasses have been conducted by X-ray diffraction method and amorphous nature was confirmed. The band gap energy ( ) and cut off edge wavelength (λcut-off) of glasses were determined by absorption and transmittance spectra. The transmittance of the glass samples in the range of 300-700 nm are approximately 70-80%. From the emission spectrum, the

optimum CeO2 concentration was found to be 0.5 mol%. The effect of the reducing agents on the physical and optical properties of the borogermanate glasses containing 0,5 mol% CeO2 were investigated. By applying the deconvolution method to the emission spectrum broad emission band at approximately 390 nm was found to be due to the 2F7/2 → 5D1 and 2F5/2→ 5D1 optical transitions of Ce3+. According to the results obtained from UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectra it is concluded that the most effective agent for reducing the Ce4+ ions into Ce3+ in the determined composition is 5 mol % graphite. The results obtained in this study thought to be helpful in the synthesis of CeO2 doped glasses with higher luminescence yield.
Nadir toprak elementi katkılı lüminesans malzemeler dar yayınlanma bandları, yüksek renk saflıkları, geniş yayınlanma aralıkları (mor ötesinden kızıl ötesine), floresans için nanosaniyelerden milisaniyelere, fosforesans için ise dakikalara varan bozunma zamanları, ilginç optik ve manyetik özellikleri nedenleri ile günümüzde yüksek-teknoloji uygulamalarında sıklıkla kullanılmaktadırlar. Nadir toprak elementleri arasında seryum elementi çok ilgi çekmiştir. Diğer nadir toprakların arasında Ce+3 iyonu parite- izinli geçişleri ile birkaç nanosaniye mertebesinde hızlı bozunma zamanına sahip geniş bir yayınlanma bandı ile UV ve görünür bölgede daha yüksek lüminsesans şiddeti gösterir. Hızlı Ce+3 ile aktive edilmiş cam ve kristal gibi inorganik malzemeler ekran ve aydınlatmalarda fosfor olarak kullanılmalarının yanı sıra yüksek enerji ve nükleer fizikte, medikal görüntülemede ve güvenlikte sintilatör olarak kullanılmaktadırlar. Silikat, borogermanat, borosilikat ve fosfat gibi cam sistemlerinde seryum iyonunun spektroskopik çalışmaları mevcuttur. Seryum elementi yapıda Ce+3 ve Ce+4 olmak üzere iki kararlı değerlik durumuna sahiptir ve lüminesans özelliklerinin iyileştirilmesi için Ce+4 iyonlarının Ce+3‟e indirgenmesi gerekmektedir. Söz konusu indirgenme yapıya katkılanacak indirgeyici ajanlar ya da eritme işleminde kullanılacak indirgeyici atmosfer ile gerçekleştirilebilir. Bu tez çalışmasının ilk aşamasında farklı konsantrasyonlarda CeO2 katkılanmış borogermanat camları (B2O3-GeO2-Gd2O3:CeO2) hazırlanmış ve optimum Ce+3 iyon konsantrasyonuna sahip cam kompozisyonu belirlenmiştir. Ġkici aşamada ise belirlenen kompozisyona değişen oranlarda çeşitli indirgeyici ajanlar (Si3N4, C, Sb2O3) katkılanmış ve elde edilen camların fiziksel, yapısal ve optik özellikleri incelenmiştir. Camların yapısal analizleri X-ışını kırınımı yöntemiyle yapılarak amorf doğaları doğrulanmıştır. Camların band aralığı enerjileri ( ) ve kesme kenarı dalga boyları ( ) soğurma ve geçirgenlik spektrumlarından hesaplanmıştır. Cam örneklerin 300-700 nm aralığındaki geçirgenlikleri yaklaşık

olarak %70-80 aralığındadır. Yayınlanma spektrumunun değerlendirilmesi sonucunda optimum CeO2 konsantrasyonu % 0,5 mol olarak bulunmuştur. % 0,5 mol CeO2 içeren borogermanat kompozisyonuna katkılanan indirgeyici ajanların camın fiziksel ve optik özellikleri üzerine etkileri incelenmiştir. Yayınlanma spektrumuna ayrıştırma yönteminin uygulanması ile yaklaşık olarak 390 nm de yer alan geniş yayınlanma bandının, Ce+3„ün 2F7/2→5D1 ve 2F5/2→5D1 optik geçişlerinden kaynaklandığı bulunmuştur. Soğurma ve yayınlanma spektrumları kullanılarak sözkonusu kompozisyonda Ce+4 iyonlarını Ce+3‟e en etkin şekilde indirgeyen ajanın %5 mol grafit olduğu sonucu elde edilmiştir. Bu çalışmada elde edilen sonuçların daha yüksek lüminesans verimine sahip CeO2 katkılı camların sentezlenmesinde yol gösterici olacağı düşünülmektedir.
