Abstract: Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı üniversitede eğitim görmekte olan birinci sınıf fen bilimleri öğretmen adaylarının Kimya I dersi kapsamında gazlar konusuna yönelik problemlerin çözümünde karar verme süreçlerinde bilişsel yapılarını belirlemektir.
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the decision-making processes of first-year science teacher candidates studying at the university in solving problems related to the subject of gases within the scope of the Chemistry I course. Material and Methods: The research was carried out with eight first-year science teacher candidates who took the Chemistry I course in the 2020-2021 academic year, using a nested single-case design. "Pre-Knowledge Questions Regarding Gases", "Questions Regarding the Decision-Making Process Regarding Gases" and "Questions Regarding the Decision-Making Process Steps" were used as data collection tools. In the research, "Scientific Information Pool", "Scientific Knowledge Well Model" and concept maps were used to reveal cognitive structures for decision making processes. Descriptive and content analysis methods were used in the analysis of the data obtained. Results: Regarding the first sub-problem of the study, it was found that the pre-information of the science teacher candidates about the subject of gases was above average and the types of scientific knowledge in the scientific information pool they used in solving the problems of the subject of gases were expected and differentiated. Regarding the second sub-problem of the study, it was determined that the epistemological levels of the scientific knowledge types used by the science teacher candidates in solving the problems related to the decision-making process related to gases, and the levels of scientific knowledge that deepen in the scientific knowledge well model as the cognitive level of the questions increases. In addition, it was determined that the scores they got from the concept maps explaining the relationships between scientific knowledge types differed in questions with different cognitive levels. In the third sub-problem of the study, the stages of the science teacher candidates in determining the problem in the decision-making process, collecting information and evaluating the decision were examined. It was determined that they "incompletely expressed" the problem in questions with a high cognitive level, and that they could not adequately relate the relations between information types at levels that deepened according to the scientific knowledge well model during the information gathering stage. In the evaluation phase of the decision, it was determined that they were able to evaluate the options and solutions they chose and that their decision-making style was rational. Conclusion: In this research, it was concluded that the teacher candidates pre-information of chemistry and their cognitive structures about gases were determinative in the decision-making process in solving chemistry-related problems.
