The concept of unemployment, which is a global issue faced by developed and underdeveloped countries today, brings both economic and social problems in societies. Unemployment, which differs according to developed and underdeveloped countries, is a serious problem even for the most developed countries of the world today. Decline in production capacity, global economic crises, incorrect economic policies are among the biggest causes of unemployment. Turkey is one of the countries that have a serious unemployment problem. In some studies in the literature, it is concluded that the unionization concept does not interact with the unemployment concept, while in some there are studies with many different views that unionization increases unemployment, and in others, unionization reduces unemployment. However, there is no consensus on unionization and unemployment. In this study, the existence of the relationship between unionization and unemployment in Turkey has been examined. Annual data for the period 1988-2020 are used. In the analysis part, unit root and the Least Squares Method (LSM) tests were performed. According to the empirical results, when the unemployment rate increased by 1%, the unionization rate decreased by 0.15%. Therefore, unionization affects unemployment negatively. In other words, as the unionization rate gets stronger, unemployment decreases. |
