Abstract: | Su birikmesi, özellikle sulanan tarım alanlarında ve yüksek yağışa sahip bölgelerde bitki gelişimini ve verimini
Waterlogging is a problem, which negatively affects plant growth and yield especially in irrigated area and high rainfed regions. In this stage, biological and chemical processes in plant and soil also have been changed. The main cause of damage under waterlogging is oxygen deprivation, which affect nutrient and water uptake. Plants need oxygen for cell division, growth and the uptake and transport of nutrients. Lack of oxygen shift the energy metabolism from aerobic conditions to anaerobic conditions. Generally, the oxygen level in a saturated soil reaches the point that is harmful to plant growth after about 48-96 hours. In an effort to survive, tissues growing under reduced oxygen levels use alternate metabolic pathways that produce by-products, some of which are toxic at elevated levels. Germinating seeds and emerging seedlings are very sensitive to waterlogging as their level of metabolism is high. Crops like winter cereals, legumes and especially maize tend to be more sensitive to waterlogging when their growing point is still below the surface of the soil (before the 5-6 leaf stage). With the exception of winter wheat, many of the cereals and maize can be killed if soils are saturated beyond 48 hours when soil temperatures exceed some degrees. Plants adapted to waterlogged conditions, have mechanisms to cope with this stress such as aerenchyma formation, increased availability of soluble sugars, greater activity of glycolytic pathway and fermentation enzymes and involvement of antioxidant defence mechanism to cope with the post hypoxia/anoxia oxidative stress. |
