This paper is aimed to explain the history current state of the classification of salt-affected soils. Since the beginning of the past century salt-affected soils have been classified with different criteria into several classification schemes. These differences are mainly based on the salt and soda content and type classifying a soil as “Solonchak” or “Solonetz” and used for practical and application purposes. In several countries classification systems have been developed and these classification systems are defined on the basis of the classification criteria. At Present, the newly developed world soil classification system WRB includes the criteria of the U.S. soil taxonomy as well as criteria of the Russian and Hungarian soil classification systems and theWRBcontains easy and clearly understandable categories capable of development. |
